T. Benny Rushing was born October 30, 1941 in Marshville, North Carolina. He earned his undergraduate and Masters degrees at Wake Forest University in 1964 and 1965 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in 1968. Rushing's career at the University of Utah began in 1969 when he became a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics. His field of specialty was topology.
